Technology has evolved immensely in the last decade. Compared to our homes in the 90s, we have more technology in our back pocket now than we did in our entire house. Artificial intelligence (AI) has been a popular buzzword in the science fiction world, but researchers agree that the world of AI is becoming a reality. Society as we know it is transforming and AI will soon impact our everyday life on multiple levels from the environment to assisted living.
Impact the Environment
Climate change and pollution are two issues that have caused some concern in society. Robots and other AI devices are being developed to help reduce the effects of air and water pollution. New software programs will help robots determine the difference between biological organisms and pollution. Smart software is also helping to fight air pollution by capturing carbon dioxide and chemical pollutants from burning factories before they released into the air.
Improve the Healthcare Industry
In recent years, AI has become an integrated part of the healthcare industry. Robotic medical assistants have been seen carrying supplies down the hall to monitoring a patient’s vitals and alerting nurses of when a patient is in need of assistance. One of the most cutting-edge uses of AI in healthcare is robotic surgery assistants. These surgery assistants can pass tools to the surgeon, learn their preferences, and help conduct surgery through a smaller incision.
Provide Additional Security
Artificial intelligence is already used as a security measure to not only protect families from break-ins but to protect the country from terrorist threats. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security utilizes an advanced software monitoring system that can scan phone calls and distinguish normal conversations from threats. Looking at modern home alarm systems, we can note how AI has taken home security to a new level. The alarm systems of today combine motion detectors, sensors, and cameras with voice and facial recognition. With these features, security systems can now alert you or even emergency services of a burglary or another emergency.
Assisted Care for Elders
For senior citizens, completing everyday tasks can be a challenge. Many senior citizens either have to move into assisted living facilities or hire a personal caretaker to help them around the house. Robots can offer the 24/7 care that elders need, without moving out of their home. Already there have been robots who can complete household chores from vacuuming, mopping, mowing our lawns. There have even been a few experimental robots who have helped lift people into beds, fold towels, follow recipes, and dispense pills.
Although it can be hard to predict the future, we can infer that AI will play a large part in our lives. With current and future developments of AI, we will see our society evolve for the better.
